CUMA will be holding a “Climate Change & Sustainability  – The Credit Union Challenge” Conference on the 9th of February 2023 in the Hodson Bay Hotel, Athlone.

You will have all received the survey on Climate Related & Environmental Risks from the Central Bank on Monday the 19th of December. The purpose of this survey is to gather information from credit unions on the level of awareness of the risks amongst credit unions &  the actions being taken to manage/mitigate the risk

The Central Bank Supervisory Expectations focus on 5 key area’s

  • Governance – Firms need to demonstrate clear ownership by the Board of climate risks affecting the firm.
  • Risk Management Framework – Impact of climate change on the risk profile & to enhance their existing risk management frameworks to ensure robust climate risk identification, measurement, monitoring & mitigation.
  • Strategy & Business Model Risk – Business model analysis to determine the impacts of climate risk ( & opportunities) on the firms overall risk profile, business strategy & sustainability, & to inform strategic planning.
  • Disclosures: Legal requirements on disclosure are clear that firms need to ensure they do not engage in “greenwashing”
  • Scenario Analysis & Stress Testing: Critical to assess the impact of potential future climate outcomes, including impacts on capital adequacy

This conference will be the first in a series of events that will address climate change and how it to help credit unions deal with the challenges of climate change and how to manage climate related & environmental risks.
